In the east of the federal state Lower Saxony is the District of Helmstedt located. There live near 91.500 inhabitants in an area of 670 m². It is one of the smallest Districts of Germany. The district of Helmstedt is adjacent in the east to the federal state Saxony-Anhalt and so you find as directly neighbors the District of Harz and Börde. On the Lower Saxony side the Districts of Wolfenbüttel and Gifhorn and also the cities Wolfsburg and Braunschweig borders to the district of Helmstedt.
The district is divided into municipalities and cities. In the following are these:

Economy and transport
Versatile and diverse, the economic structure in the district of Helmstedt can be described. The various entrepreneurial offers range from agriculture to industry, to commerce and to industrial and human-oriented services. As in the entire region, automotive industry is a key economic factor in Wolfsburg, Braunschweig and Salzgitter.Traffic connections to Braunschweig, Magdeburg, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter are given with the A2 and the A39. The B1, the B82, the B244 and 245a are to be mentioned as important long-distance roads.Sights and leisure activities in the district of HelmstedtThe Elm-Lappwald Nature Park is a natural area with 470 square kilometers and offers a landscape of green meadows, old beech forests, colorful fields, geological specialties and cultural highlights. As a starting point for extensive tours in the nature park, the Specialist workshop Königslutter is located, in which the Geo / Nature Park Info Center is located. The idyllic city has its own imperial cathedral. Romanesque churches are a large part of the territory of the county and natural park. Under the term ""Romanesque"", the district of Helmstedt offers visitors interesting excursions to the most beautiful religious buildings in the region.The city of Schöningen is known for its more than 300.000 years old hunting spears, with which hunting for wild horses was once made. The sensational archeology finds from the Schöningen open-cast mine tell the story of climate. Of course, the city Helmstedt also has many attractions such as the Juleum -the historic university from the epoch of the Renaissance, the St. Marienberg monastery with the parament workshop from the culture Romanesque period and the Zonal Border Museum, which is dedicated to the former Inner-German border until 1989.
